Exhibit Engineer
Boss Display is a full-service design and production firm specializing in interactive exhibits for Children’s Museums and Science Centers. We are currently seeking a full-time Exhibit Engineer to join our team.
Job Description:
Exhibit Engineers provide guidance and solutions to a talented team of Exhibit Drafters, developing the engineering of custom interactive exhibits from 2D concepts to 3D models ready for manufacturing. Exhibit Engineers report to the Director of Engineering, manage the Exhibit Drafters, and coordinate with Project Managers, Designers, CNC operators, Exhibit Fabricators, Painters, and Outside Vendors.
Roles and Responsibilities:
- Oversee Exhibit Drafters throughout the engineering process by providing guidance and solutions.
- Work with the Exhibit Drafters to create weekly timelines and task lists to ensure that goals are being met.
- Review exhibits throughout the fabrication process to ensure that the desired functionality, reliability, and safety standards are being met.
- Troubleshoot and devise engineering solutions for any manufacturing or functionality issues that arise during production or any time after
- Provide technical knowledge on mechanical, electrical, kinetic, water and air flow systems
- Explain how various fabrication processes are approached and executed including but not limited to:Material selection and properties
- Fastening methods (mechanical fasteners, joinery, adhesives, welding)Finishing techniques and the tools used to achieve these finishesCapabilities and limitations
- Provide guidance on important factors including but not limited to:Structural integrity
- Long-term durabilitySafety standardsMounting and suspending methodsMaterial finishes
- Spec purchase parts that will be required for the project and how they will be integrated into the exhibit
- Decide when custom made parts will be necessary
- Work with project managers to ensure that the engineering solutions and material choices made throughout the engineering process align with the contracted design
- Work to improve the overall quality and functionality of exhibits being produced while streamlining the engineering and manufacturing processes and creating a set of standards
- Review 3d models with clients via video conferencing discussing all aspects of the exhibit from the overall construction and functionality to the paint and finish schedule, installation, and maintenance of the exhibit(s)
- Continue to work on and improve Boss standard practices including SolidWorks drafting methods and understanding, SolidWorks PDM organization and growth, materials, hardware, and components used for fabrication.
Qualifications:
- High level of mechanical and general fabrication aptitude
- Working knowledge of mechanical design, kinetic motion, water and air flow dynamics, and structural analysis
- Materials and manufacturing knowledge of wood, plastic, metal, foam, CNC machining, electrical systems, fiberglass work, 3D printing, painting, coatings, and adhesives
- Proficient in 2D and 3D CAD (Illustrator and Solidworks experience are a plus)
- Experience in management and working with others in a team environment
- Excellent organizational and positive communication skills
- Strong ability to clearly and effectively communicate engineering ideas and concepts through verbal and visual communication
- Ability to adhere to timelines
- Maintain and streamline engineering and fabrication standards and practices
