The Studio
Hirsch & Mann is a London based studio with a mission to create bold and memorable digital & physical experiences for premium spaces worldwide. We have unprecedented experience in designing creative technology exhibits and artworks all around the world.
We are a small company and every team member gets involved in many different aspects of projects. We encourage learning outside of your comfort zone across the team and dedicate time and resources to internal R&D projects that the team is deeply involved in. Our lovely studio is in Hackney.
The Role
We are looking for a Lead Creative Technologist (the Venn diagram of programming, engineering & creative) to help design, build and prototype interactive objects, experiences and environments. The perfect candidate will work with the team to design, build, program, and test modules and systems, travel to and install on location, and maintain creations running in production.
The role requires excellent organisational skills, quick learning on the job, excellent research and diagnostic / problem-solving skills, and a hands-on attitude with meticulous attention to detail. A mature, enthusiastic and dedicated approach to building the studio’s technological knowledge base and infrastructure is essential.
The ideal applicant will have experience bridging the gap between design, electronic and hardware systems. They will be eager to join creative brainstorms and the design process. They will be super excited about the use of technology in any media, with enthusiasm for hardware and software systems on varying scales – from embedded devices to large scale networks. They will be excellent at working independently and in collaborating with their colleagues.
The Candidate’s Responsibilities:
- Brainstorm with the whole team
Prototype and enhance creative concepts through rapid iterations of prototyping with the team..
Deliver completed and tested creative tech solutions.
Always be seeking ways to improve internal code frameworks.
Provide support and debugging to end users (the team or clients).
Sensible and long term problem-solving, during the development and once the application has been deployed.
Maintaining a consistently high level of documentation across all areas of work.
Effectively communicate with, and at times manage and enhance H&M’s supply chain.
Keep up-to-date with the cutting edge of technology innovation in our space and beyond.
Lead the drive for application advancements and the integration of emerging technologies.
Share your knowledge openly with the team and at times with clients.
Work closely with the H&M Project Manager and Production Lead to ensure projects are both on time and on budget.
Supervise Creative Tech team (in house or freelance).
Required Skills
- At least 7 years working professionally as a Creative Technologist / Developer / Electronic Engineer / Design Engineer.
- Expertise with both Windows and Mac operating systems. Linux is a bonus.
- Proven experience standardising and deploying standalone software systems in temporary or permanent installations / artworks / kiosks and managing them remotely.
- A mix of programming languages that will likely include JS, Java, Python, C++, C#
- A mix of programming frameworks that include: Node, P5, Processing, MPlab, AVR Studio, Arduino, Open Frameworks; OpenCV, MediaPipe, Touch Designer, Unreal Engine 4+
- Familiarity with microcontrollers (PIC / AVR / Arduino related MCUs)
- Ability to quickly prototype and troubleshoot between MCU’s and peripheral inputs & outputs using oscilloscopes, data logging, desoldering, etc.
- Experience working with a variety of sensors and peripherals including Depth & RGB Cameras, IR sensors, stepper, servo & DC motors , optical sensors, LED matrices.
- Experience building BOM’s and sourcing, liaising with suppliers.
- Experience working with a variety of communication protocols (RS485, RS232, UDP, OSC, DMX, TCP).
- Great communication and interpersonal skills. You can clearly express your ideas while also being able to listen to others.
- Experience working very well within a multidisciplinary team including creatives and project managers.
- An ability to create readable and accurate system diagrams at micro or macro scale.
Bonus Points Experience: (Experience with the following tools will be helpful)
- PCB design package (KiCAD; Eagle etc).
- Solidworks (or another solid modelling/mechanical design package).
- Building/prototyping electro-mechanical objects / experiences.
