Interactive Developer (Unreal Engine)

ngx is looking for a talented Unreal Engine Developer to join our team! This is a hybrid role requiring in-person presence at our Vancouver studio, a minimum of two days a week, for prototype development, testing, and project review sessions.

The Role

The focus of this role is to plan, build, and deploy software for a variety of interactive and immersive exhibits. Projects can range from touchscreen interactives to various forms of AR, VR, projection mapping, computer vision, mocap, digital twins, and more. Currently, we build many applications in Unity, but we are actively increasing our use of Unreal Engine 5+, especially for projects aiming for 3D photorealism, or which will involve extensive collaboration with 3D artists. The successful candidate will be proficient in core Unreal Engine 5+ systems, especially Blueprints and C++. They will be continuously learning more about the Engine and increasing their breadth of knowledge, keeping up with developments and new Engine features, and helping to teach/mentor Unreal development and share knowledge with the team.

Some of our work involves unique hardware requirements like various kinds of sensors (e.g. phidget, nexmosphere), custom peripherals with PLC TwinCAT or S7, depth or stereo cameras (e.g. Realsense, Zed, Kinect), projectors, LED tiles, DMX, assistive technology (e.g. Storm NavPad), or have unique user interface and display system requirements (e.g. nDisplay), or require the ability to be updatable by the client, or access APIs. The technical challenges vary a great deal from project to project, and often make use of Unreal in unusual and creative ways, so you can expect to never be bored!

Your primary role and projects will be focused on Unreal Engine programming. However, because the technical requirements of our projects can vary substantially, you will have to be comfortable with learning new technologies on the job as needed and as they become available. You have to be comfortable with not knowing everything and working under conditions of imperfect technical knowledge. This often means setting up experiments, prototypes, proof-of-concepts, but also research, reading documentation and forums.

If you are committed to mastering Unreal Engine, and you enjoy project variety, continuous learning, working on cutting-edge international projects for the cultural and visitor experience sector, and collaborating on a multi-disciplinary team pushing the limits of what creative technology can do, then this is the opportunity for you!
