Lighting Hardware and Systems Designer – Interactive Art

Jen Lewin Studio designs and fabricates large-scale, interactive public artworks that have been exhibited worldwide. Based in Bushwick, Brooklyn, NY, we are seeking a technically skilled and highly motivated individual to join our team. This full-time, in-person role offers the chance to work on cutting-edge projects in a collaborative and innovative environment.
Position Overview:
The Lighting Hardware and Systems Designer will be responsible for designing, maintaining, and servicing interactive lighting systems for our public art installations. This role involves building and troubleshooting advanced digital lighting systems, ensuring optimal functionality both in-studio and onsite, and contributing to the success of complex interactive exhibits.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design, build, and maintain digital lighting systems for interactive public artworks.
- Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues related to AC/DC electronics, DC LED control systems, and custom lighting hardware.
- Perform onsite field service trips to install, repair, or deinstall artworks (approximately traveling once a month).
- Organize and manage electronic components, tools, and technical documentation.
- Collaborate closely with the studio team to integrate lighting systems into artwork designs and resolve technical challenges.
- Ensure compliance with safety and performance standards across all installations.

- Existing authorization to work in the United States.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Ability to start full-time in Brooklyn on or before April 1st (Jen Lewin Studio does not cover relocation costs).
- Minimum of 2 years of professional work experience directly related to this position.
- Comprehensive experience soldering and working with DC electronics and LED data systems.
- Proficiency in writing hardware-based C code in an environment other than the Arduino IDE.
- Ability to comfortably work from a scissor lift at height, if required.
- Willingness to drive a forklift, if required.
- Ability to travel for work as needed.
- Strong familiarity with basic PCB design and assembly.
- Strong experience soldering and assembling small electrical components.
