The Music and Theater Arts (MTA) section of the School of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences (SHASS) at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), located in Cambridge, Massachusetts, invites applications for a professor in contemporary performance practice. This is an open rank, tenure track search with a preference for an Assistant Professor. Position to begin July 1, 2025 or on a mutually agreed date thereafter. MTA offers supportive mentorship to junior faculty and instructors and is an exceptional environment for artists and scholars with active creative practices centered on innovative performance-making across disciplines. The program seeks individuals who practice collaboration, empathy, and self-reflection in contributing to an inclusive, welcoming culture.

Qualifications. Qualified candidates will hold an MFA or PhD in Theater, Arts, Performing Arts, or a related subject by the start of employment. Two years’ experience teaching at the University level is also required and may be gained during the degree program. Faculty duties include teaching undergraduate courses in theater and related subjects. Professors are also expected to serve on committees, advise students, and participate fully in the governance of the Section, the School, and the Institute. Promotion and tenure will require evidence of innovative creative work or scholarship that has the potential for tangible impact on the field. Employment is contingent upon the completion of a satisfactory background check, including possible verification of any findings of misconduct (or pending investigations) from prior employers.
