The Technical & Production Specialist works as part of the team that oversees the direction and functional operation of the technology in the ATLAS B2 Center for Media, Arts & Performance, including the Black Box Experimental Studio and the adjoining technical spaces. This position maintains an expert understanding of the operation and capabilities of the B2 facilities and provides guidance and leadership in expanding usage and access of the spaces and multimedia systems. This position is also responsible for managing and maintaining the facility to ensure reliable and consistent operation of the technologically advanced systems. The Technical & Production Specialist works closely with the B2 staff and under the direct supervision of the B2 CMAP Managing Director.

The Technical & Production Specialist also provides curricular support and offers instruction on B2’s performance technologies, including basic training, in-depth coursework, project direction and support for faculty, students and staff who use the production studios, multidisciplinary performance spaces, and media lab resources. This position will also maintain relationships with CU campus partners, including Facilities Management, Office of Information Technology and other related units.

Additional responsibilities include (but are not limited to) advising in matters pertinent to the leading approaches and policies for B2, as well as administering the B2 audio, video and data related infrastructure and associated hardware. Ongoing work requires strong skills in troubleshooting technical problems, managing a periodic maintenance schedule, performing routine equipment repair and upgrading system infrastructure.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Technical Direction

  • Support, manage and facilitate day-to-day operations and activities within the B2 spaces, including operational protocols, scheduling, administration, and oversight.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert on the technical and operational aspects of the equipment within the B2 areas, including the three camera multimedia studio and the Black Box Experimental Studio.
  • Advise on production logistics and provide technical direction and oversight for complex multimedia, immersive and interactive research and creative work, including motion capture, projection mapping, lighting, sound, networking, and sophisticated software platforms.
  • Stay current on industry standards and new directions in the field, and advise on sustainable and innovative directions for B2’s hardware and software solutions.

System Maintenance

  • Provide ongoing system maintenance, upgrades, repairs B2 technologies, such as video, mocap, audio, lighting, as well as troubleshooting software and hardware systems.
  • Manage periodic repair and maintenance of physical infrastructure requiring third party subcontractors. Coordinate with vendors and other parties on broadcast equipment repair, including scheduling and management of work.
  • Conduct regular software and equipment upgrades of all systems in the B2, including research and advice on equipment replacements or future purchases with options and estimated costs.

Instruction

  • Lead orientation sessions with instruction on core competencies, general operation, usage etiquette, and technical equipment overviews to prospective students and collaborators from the B2 community with the end goal of working independently in the space and to generate new channels for developing student interest, course enrollments, and program participation.
  • Develop curriculum and lead courses and workshops providing specialized training into featured software or technical topics within the facilities and equipment of the B2 Center.
  • Plan, coordinate and facilitate regular events to foster community and develop a growing culture of further learning and collaboration.
  • Provide curricular support to ATLAS course offerings, academic programs and student communities.

Administration

  • Work closely with the B2 staff and managing director to manage logistics, communication and coordinate scheduling for students, researchers and artists, ensuring necessary benchmarks are met and information is conveyed and exchanged in a timely fashion.
  • Support the wide range of activities and day-to-day operations of the Black Box and B2 areas, including protocols, calendaring, access permissions, maintenance, and door schedules.
  • Regularly review and update public-facing documentation, equipment lists, room and technical specifications, etc.
  • Facilitate evening and weekend access for students and researchers, as needed.

What We Can Offer

  • Salary range for this position is $60,000 – $70,000.

What We Require

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
  • Three years experience in technical theater and stage management techniques.
  • Expertise in one or more of the following production systems: Intelligent DMX lighting, multi screen projection, motion capture interaction, spatial audio modeling/playback.
  • Knowledge of spatial audio models such as ambisonics, layer-based amplitude panning, and associated software libraries and plug-ins.
  • Knowledge of inter-application communication protocols and frameworks such as Open Sound Control (OSC) and Syphon/Spout.
  • Knowledge of programming languages and environments such as Max/MSP/Jitter, TouchDesigner, Unity, Unreal Engine.
  • Knowledge of TCP/UDP/IP networking.

What We Would Like You to Have

  • Master’s degree in a related field.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of associated software, including Resolume, Isadora, Q Lab, Mad Mapper, for projection, Ableton Live (knowledge of ShowSync plugins, VideoSync, and Beam is a plus), Reaper, and Pro Tools for audio, and the Qualisys Track Manager (or experience with other motion capture systems and software such as Vicon, Rokoko, Optitrack) for motion capture, ETC lighting consoles, Obsidian Art Net nodes.
  • Strong working knowledge of Dante audio networking (using Dante Virtual Soundcard and Dante Controller) and NDI video, including NDI Video Tools and Tricaster video production/streaming systems preferred.
  • Knowledge of KUMO Router, ROSS DA system, Blackmagic URSA studio cameras, ATEM camera control panel, Clearcom PL system, Crestron systems, Netgear managed switches, Evertz caption encoder and Master clock systems.
  • Significant experience and knowledge in providing technical support for performance events and research.
  • Significant systems and computer software experience in several areas of production design and support.
  • Knowledge of ICTS Ambisonics for Max/MSP, Envelop, and/or IEM.
  • Knowledge of Open Frameworks and creative coding in Python.
  • Experience developing curriculum and teaching.
